This is the only Fuck on my list that originates from memes. Not only is it extremely popular, in meme culture and in real life expression, it’s also one of my favorites. It captures a wide range of circumstances with a simple implication.
Defined:
warning, life lesson, threat, karmic justice
Shorthand: FAFO
In a sentence:
“They fucked around and found out real quick.”
“Some serious FAFO coming their way.”
What are the origins?
Around 2019, Fuck Around and Find Out emerged on political parody memes. At first as a contrast to the “Don’t Tread on Me” slogan, and then more progressive circles unhappy with old guard DNC candidates. It grew in meme popularity as the 2020 presidential election turned into a complete shitshow. Honestly, that year feels like a decade ago; time hasn’t felt the same since then.
During the year that everything changed, memes were a saving grace for many of us. A convenient and accessible way to laugh at tragedy and circumstances beyond anyone’s control. It makes perfect sense that this phrase jumped from online sharing directly into our daily use.
How is it useful?
Fuck Around and Find Out as an expression is inherently true and easy to understand. The more you engage with something, the more you will come to understand; good or bad.
Although often used to point out idiotic behavior, it’s equally applicable to ordinary life mistakes, and a useful warning to others about a toxic person or situation. Then, there are perfect instances of karma, where the phrase is *chef’s kiss* as a comment.
Even though I’m not a fan of TikTok, there are gem videos, like this one explaining the Fuck Around and Find Out graph. The mathematics of FAFO are undeniable.
